If someone had asked you what do you do, what would be your reply?
I would tell them that I’m a creater of arts. Cause that is my passion. It doesn’t matter if it’s clothes, music, productions or brand concepts. It all comes together as presenting a piece of my mind and how I see things. My purpose is to inspire people with what I do.
You run your own fashion label Maison Mason, can you tell us a little bit about its aesthetics and what the brand is about?
My brand is all about not conforming to society and its regulations. My clothes are fit for men and women. To polarize and really reflect your inner self. Exploring yourself and your body, lifting the borders of masculinity and femininity. Everything is one.
Berlin is your hometown. What is your relationship with the city?
I’m in berlin for almost 7 years now, and so far the city made me to the man I am now. I got incredibly inspired by its inhabitants - creatives from all over the world gather here to exchange their ideas and creations. It’s a wonderful place to learn and to get inspired.
With having such a busy life, how do you find the work/life balance
Well, I’m still looking for that balance. Up to now i’m still drowning in work and endless projects which I take on to even the path for my future. Up to this date I haven’t had a proper vacation in 7 years. What keeps me going are my regular dance sessions on Sunday at Berghain and my incredible friends and family who are always right by my side.
You are also a very talented dancer. To what extent does music influence your life and what you do.
Music has been in my live as long as I remember. Growing up to the pumping sounds of Michael Jackson, Prince and Janet Jackson, I was dancing even before i was able to walk. So it came only natural that I linked music to my other expressing art forms. I do my own choreography at my runway shows for example. Art, Music, Dance, Fashion - all four go hand in hand and complete the circle. Since two years I also started to Dj. From Chicago House and Disco over Techno, the power of music and what it does to people is more than fascinating. It can be the cure to almost everything.
We met at the Koening Gallery for our photoshoot during Jeppe Heins exhibition I SEE. In this exhibition he chalenges us to look around and really observe things, to see things we usually don’t notice in our everyday life. Have you recently had a revelation like this? That you started noticing things you haven’t before?
I’ve always been an observer. Noticing things someone would only recognize by looking very carefully is kind of my strong suit. I’m also a very visual person. So I’m very intrigued by my surroundings and especially the pulse of a big city.

]]>If someone had asked you what do you do, what would be your reply?
I work on such a wide range of projects that it is challenging to feel comfortable putting myself in one box. My personal work revolves around creating abstract and surreal images, sculptures and installations, through experimental techniques and methods.
My commissioned projects range from art and science ones, photography, record cover designs to working as an designer on various music related projects. Since completing my masters degree in Art and Science at Central Saint Martins last year I have started to focus my energy on developing Mira Varg studio. My main aim is to become a true craftsman within every medium and to be able to create everything that my mind feels like giving birth to.
How would you describe your art and what is it that you try to communicate with it?
With my art, I am challenging viewers perfections and understanding of their normal reality. Through combining objects and symbols, of which the outside world would not think to link, I create my alternative universe.
I think one of the important roles of an artist is to create art which can help people escape the burden of everyday reality and make them experience feelings which are hidden deep inside their souls. As the German composer Robert Schumann said: “To send light into the darkness of men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist.”
What relationship do you have with London, specifically east London where you live.
I really like the part of London I am living in. I live in a warehouse community, converted from industrial use to a creative hub for musicians and artists, it is a perfect place to for me as I have a studio for my work, as well as a communal dark room. I could not imagine moving to any other part of London.
You also work in one of east London's iconic record stores - what role does music play in your life
Music always played important part of my life. Maybe it all started when my grand father gave me piano when I was six, then I attended music lessons and my passion for music grown everyday.
Since I came to London I started to collect Acid House records, but you would be able to find even Miles Davis or Pink Floyd in my collection. I can listen from avant-garde Japanese jazz to heavy metal, everything depends on my mood. People can often find me listening to old Slovak punk in my studio while I work. I do not know what it is about this music that makes me so productive hah.)
When we met during our photoshoot in your studio, you seemed very relaxed in front of the camera and your playfulness with your surroundings and yourself made the entire shoot so much more fun. Is not taking yourself too seriously also reflected in your art, or would you say its more dark and melancholic?
I would never consider my art as dark or melancholic, I would consider it exactly the opposite. For me the most important part is to play, to joke around and to never be scared to experiment. I think people who don’t know me might find my work dark and melancholic because of the art techniques I choose to use. I use to by obsessed with experimental darkroom print techniques and used to spend hours and hours alone in dark just with red light.
Could you please describe us your most important piece of work so far (in your eyes) , and why is it so important to you
I think the most important piece is my ongoing project Foetus Techno, on which I stared to work at the end of my Central Saint Martins studies. It is an installation project showing people the relationship between rave parties and the embryonic womb state.
Being a big fan of electronic music, particularly techno music and rave parties, I have always often questioned what it was about rave music that we love so much. I feel there are countless people around the world with these feelings and through this project I aim to highlight the connections and show them to the world.

YEARS OF DENIAL (LIVE SET)
Years of Denial is a fetishtic ritual of contorted flesh and altered states, a feverish/ infectious paradox of primitivism and modernity. The band is the alter-face of French musician/DJ/producer Jerome Tcherneyan and Czech performance artist/DJ Barkosina Hanusova. Together they produce and perform Dub infected gritty Techno/EBM and Industrial Noise. With the use of hardware and a modular synth combined with vocals and a plethora of handmade noise devices, YOD are re-visiting the dark corner of New Wave, Post Punk and rave culture.

]]>When did you start rapping?
I first started writing lyrics when I was about 16. I was playing drums at a band at the time and was writing all the lyrics for the band. I first recorded rap music when I was in my second year of college. Never took it more seriously and putting stuff out there until the last couple of years really.
When you first started putting things out, were you nervous about how people will react to it, or were you confident in the content you were making?
I was definitely proud of it, but there was definitely fear involved. I kind of don't even want to describe it as fear, because it's not fear in the visceral sense, but it is doing something scary and exposing yourself. But I very quickly realised that the fear of acceptance is not the battle at all in today's digital era. The battle of today is getting noticed. And that you just need to work really hard for anyone to even care. That totally changed my perception of what to be concerned about.
That's very true and I totally agree with that. Making good things is one thing, but trying to get the word out there and promote them is another. To go back a bit. You come from Newcastle. How's the rap scene there?
It's not very big, but it's definitely getting healthier. There are a few rap groups from Newcastle and the surrounding areas. There's a group called Dialect, or The Scrufs. They pioneered a lot of north east rapping. UK rap in general had a lot of identity crises, but they were the first people I heard who were rapping really well and completely uncompromising in terms of their sound. They have regional accents, they speak about where they're from, they are just being them selfs. Not trying to be anyone else, even tough the sound and music had some very obvious hip hop roots of US east coast hip hop. What they were rapping and how they were rapping was completely northeast of. That inspired me not to be ashamed of who you really are and just be yourself.
That is a great inspiration to have and it is amazing that it is exactly that message that got stuck with you. We are in London and we talk about rap so I have to ask you. Do you like grime?
Yeah yeah. When I was in Newcastle I knew very little about it, just was familiar with the really obvious people like Dizzy or Sway. Then I came to London and one of my good friends Ashley just taught me everything about grime, the full history. It's crazy what happened to it recently. It's very esoteric knowledge with its genesis exactly in London.
I would love to know more about grime, maybe I should talk to Ashley too.
Haha yeah you should! I guess it's a sub genre of the UK hip hop, but the weird thing about it is that by definition it has to be 140 bpm. Most hip hop music can be anything between 80 to 90 bpm. So grime in itself is a completely different tempo and that makes the rapping different. That's why it really is its own genre. What I love about it is always gets the crowds go!
Have you rapped in a grime song yourself?
Yes I've done a few. With TWOSIXTYSIX we did a song called Heartless. The sounds is very melodic and got all these guitars in it. It's actually by a grime producer called Vibrant. I've been also writing stuff that's been much faster recently.
How do you see hip hop and rap has evolved in the past let's say 20 years? Do you think rap music has become more mainstream?
Music evolves. It's like culture. There are waves of styles and trends. It's like fashion. What is in the forefront at the moment does not exclude those who are on fringe doing different and exciting things. Which eventually will become the new mainstream at some point. For example, some of my fav rappers Aesop Rock, Saul Williams , K-os. They are very intelligent rappers with unbelievable vocabulary with a lot of metaphors and detailed vivid imagery. But it's very dense and hard to understand. But hip hop and rap is so much on the forefront of the entertainment industry nowadays. Like everyones parents know now who rappers are. Therefore I'd like to believe what down the line we will see people liking more complicated stuff, like those guys I mentioned are doing.
You're part of a collective called TWOSIXTYSIX. Tell me more about it and who are the members?
Yes it's a project I founded with a few good friends. We all met on a producer course run by Converse and since then we have used this as a platform to release music and put on events and live shows. Member are JAckie (beats by JAckie) , Fosterbeats, CD Spinz, Liv, Chris Love and Rtmgsn.
Do you have any shows planned up for the near future?
We're playing at the O2 Academy Islington, supporting a Canadian rapper Mad Child (editors note: this gig already happened by the time of the release of this article), and then we're playing a festival Meadows in the Mountains in Bulgaria, on top of a mountain. It is our first international show so we're really excited about that!

]]>We met Adam and Evelyn on a sunny February day earlier this year, as both of them were in town, doing their usual pit stop whilst travelling between Bratislava, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and London. Adam suggested meeting at an art gallery and workspace in Clapton named By Other Means , where our photographer James Clare tried capturing both of them during their creative process.
Adam & Eve (as they call their professional duo), have been long time collaborators and creative partners, developing their visual language for some time now. They both come from Slovakia, and have already worked with many international clients including Gucci, Cartier and BVLGARI, presenting their work on many established platforms and fashion film festivals. Both pursuing art direction for film and photography while defying what it means to be a multidisciplinary image making duo.
We love their work in and outside of their duo, and you can see their creations at:

Late last year, we were proud to present our new series of events, to introduce you to our favourite upcoming artists. We’re going to be putting on events throughout the year to celebrate and support musicians that we discover. First up were the RUMOURS.
We first heard of RUMOURS thanks to our friend, Jesper, and we immediately fell in love. The trio of Marion, Fede and Mark have crafted a unique sound that weaves together touches of electronic beats, ambient piano riffs, and melodic vocals. What we really like about them is their authenticity. They’re doing their own thing, paving their own way and making it happen. Rumours are about to go from being a whisper in the woods, to an avalanche-inducing-echo. They’ve already played at KOKO, Miranda, Village Underground, The 100 Club, and we we're delighted to share them with you.
